| Working experience and occupation | Dato' Seri Prof. Dr. Ir. Zaini Ujang is a professional environmental engineer-cum-scientist who integrates studies on water ecology with engineering systems towards pollution control and sustainability, especially with reference to river rehabilitation and environmental sustainability in developing countries. His interest in the field leads him to collaborate with leading scholars worldwide, particularly in membrane bioreactor, granulation process and membrane biofouling control. Dr. Zaini is a Fellow of various professional bodies and a Visiting Professor at the Imperial College London (UK), Lund (Sweden) and Tsukuba (Japan). He received the Honorary Doctor of Science from Newcastle University (UK) (2018) and was also Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia from 2008 till 2013. He was the youngest Vice-Chancellor ever appointed for public university in Malaysia, and later became the Secretary General of three ministries from 2013 to 2018. For Dr. Zaini's remarkable contribution to the nation, he became the first recipient of the prestigious Malaysia Merdeka Award 2009 for the category of Outstanding Scholastic Achievement. He has been conferred with the Darjah Seri Setia Tuanku Muhriz Yang Amat Terbilang (SSTM), Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN) and the Tokoh Maal Hijrah award for 1441H at the national-level. Dr. Zaini has registered more than 20 intellectual property rights and published more than 300 technical papers and 40 books with his recent award-winning book, entitled "Ecoshift: Holistic Transformation towards Environmental Sustainability" in 2018 and "Japanese Ecosophy: A Travellers Notes" in 2019. |
